The Ruhlmann-Schutz estate was formed in 1994 when André Ruhlmann and Christine Schutz united their families' vineyards, and is now guided by four cousins of the third generation. They farm 53 hectares across Alsace under HVE Level 3 certification and progressive organic conversion, based in Dambach-la-Ville, a village known for the hillsides surrounding it. The estate draws on granite, marl, sandstone, and limestone soils along the Vosges foothills, benefiting from the driest climate in France thanks to the mountains blocking oceanic moisture.
This 2023 bottle carries the Alsace appellation, the broad regional designation covering the area's red, white, and sparkling wines. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, the only red grape permitted in Alsace, the Mosaïque bottling is vinified as a still red rather than the region's more common rosé or sparkling styles. Expect a light- to medium-bodied red with bright red berry fruit, soft tannins, and the fresh, mineral-driven character typical of Pinot Noir grown on Alsace's varied soils.
The result is a rare chance to try Alsace as a red wine region, from a family estate with real winemaking pedigree behind it.
