Château Grand Renouil has been part of the Ponty family's holdings since 1938, when Jean Ponty and his wife Jeanne purchased the property in Saint-Michel-de-Fronsac, expanding on the family's original estate at Château du Pavillon. Now run by fifth-generation winemaker Hélène Ponty, the vineyard sits on the coteau de Fronsac, farmed according to organic principles even though formal certification hasn't yet been completed.
This 2016 bottle carries the Canon-Fronsac appellation, a small, historic zone on Bordeaux's right bank near Libourne, prized for producing some of Fronsac's most elegant, age-worthy wines. Made from 100% old-vine Merlot, some vines reaching 85 years old, grown on the area's signature clay-limestone "Molasse du Fronsadais" soil, the wine is hand-harvested and aged in oak barrels for 12 months following traditional fermentation. Expect deep ruby color, blueberry and dark chocolate on the nose in youth, developing into truffle, coffee, and cigar box notes with age.
The result is widely considered the finest wine in the Ponty family's range, a serious, structured Canon-Fronsac with real aging potential and a well-earned local nickname among wine lovers.
