Château Eugénie belongs to the Couture family, winegrowers in the Cahors region since at least 1470, when family records show an ancestor farming Malbec for the Lord of Albas. The estate takes its name from the family's great-great-grandmother, Eugénie, and has been passed down father to son ever since, now certified Haute Valeur Environnementale. The vines grow across Cahors' varied terroir of gravel, clay, silica, limestone, and iron-rich soils along the terraces of the Lot valley.
This 2021 bottle carries the Cahors appellation, the historic home of Malbec, known here as "the black wine" for its deep, dense color. The Pierre Le Grand cuvée takes its name from Tsar Peter the Great of Russia, who was said to treat his stomach ailments with the healing tannins of Cahors wine. Made from 85% Malbec and 15% Merlot, it shows the grape's structure and intensity, with notes of blackberry, cassis, and licorice, framed by firm, well-integrated tannins built for aging.
The result is a serious, historically rooted Cahors from a family that has farmed this same land for over 550 years.
