Château St. Saturnin is the work of Adrien Tramier, a winemaker originally from Algeria who studied in Montpellier before purchasing a small 3-hectare farm in Bégadan, in the far northern Médoc, in 1968. Tramier's approach has always leaned unconventional: he harvests later than most of his neighbors, sprays his vines only a handful of times a season, and sells his wines when he feels like it rather than chasing market timing. The estate has since grown to 35 hectares, still farmed with that same independent streak.
This 1995 bottle carries the Médoc appellation, the historically overlooked northern stretch of Bordeaux's Left Bank, known for wines that are lighter and more approachable in youth than their famous southern neighbors, yet capable of real development with age. Made from a Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blend grown on gravel-rich soils, three decades of bottle age have brought out classic mature Bordeaux character: dried cherry, cassis, earth, and a touch of oak-driven coffee and chocolate, with tannins long since softened.
The result is a genuinely rare taste of well-cellared Médoc, from a winemaker whose modest prices have never matched the quality aging has revealed in his wines.
