Wunsch et Mann's roots stretch back to 1793, when the Mann family began cultivating vines on the hillsides of Wettolsheim near Colmar; the estate as it exists today was formally founded in 1948 when Joseph Wunsch and Joseph Mann joined forces. Now led by the third and fourth generations of the family, the domaine farms roughly 20 hectares across Wettolsheim, Eguisheim, Colmar, and Wintzenheim, including parcels within the Steingrubler, Hengst, and Pfersigberg Grand Cru sites. The estate converted fully to organic farming in 2008, and its soils, a mosaic of granite, limestone, and clay, give its wines a wide range of aromatic character.
This 2024 Pinot Gris, labeled "1er Selection," is made entirely from Pinot Gris, a grape that thrives in Alsace and produces some of the region's richest, most textured whites. It's also certified vegan, made without any animal-derived fining agents. Sourced from a careful selection of the estate's best parcels, the wine shows Pinot Gris's characteristic full body and low acidity, with notes of ripe pear, honey, and a faint smoky spice, backed by just enough weight and richness to give it presence at the table without tipping into heaviness.
The result is a generous, textured Pinot Gris that reflects both the grape's natural richness and the estate's careful, selective approach to fruit sourcing.
